What this tool is for

Create a PNG copy of a JPG when a design tool, editing workflow, or upload system requires PNG. The conversion prevents another JPEG save at this step, but it cannot restore detail already lost in the source.

How to use it

  1. Choose a JPG or JPEG image up to 50MB.
  2. Select Process Image.
  3. Wait while the browser decodes the JPG and writes a PNG.
  4. Download the PNG and check its file size.

What happens to your image

GuavaPix decodes the visible JPG pixels and writes them into a new PNG locally. It does not reconstruct lost JPEG detail or create true transparency.

Practical uses

  • Meet a platform requirement that asks for PNG.
  • Import a photo into a design workflow that expects PNG files.
  • Avoid another lossy JPEG save before adding graphics or text.
  • Create a PNG source for later WebP conversion.

Conversion does not restore quality

PNG stores pixels losslessly, but the pixels coming from a JPG already contain its compression decisions. The PNG can therefore be larger without looking better. Use PNG when the format itself is required, not as a way to repair a compressed photo.

Important limitations

  • The output may be larger than the JPG.
  • Lost JPEG detail and artifacts remain visible.
  • The background stays opaque; no transparency is invented.
  • The conversion creates a still image only.

Frequently asked questions

Will JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. It avoids additional JPEG loss during this export, but it cannot recreate missing source detail.

Why is the PNG larger?

PNG stores pixels losslessly, while JPG is designed to compress photographs aggressively.

Will the PNG have transparency?

No. The JPG source contains no alpha channel, so the converted background remains opaque.

When is this conversion useful?

Use it for applications that require PNG or before editing steps where repeated JPEG saves would be undesirable.
